Parallel-Play is a hybrid creative practice that thrives at the intersection of Graphic Design, Pedagogy, and Advocacy.

Our design services and partnerships are focused on organizations that are Arts and Education driven, and NPOs serving their communities.

Our pedagogical practices are informed by the lack of cultural literacy within visual culture as well as the lack of diversity of lived experiences at the creative table of visual culture.

Our advocacy work is driven by the need for more affordable and equitable pathways to design education and careers. We are interested in investigating and imagining educational and professional environments that are able to transmogrify a diverse range of lived experiences into sound design practices, and rich visual storytelling.

*Parallel-Play is a stage of social development where children play separately but adjacent to one another—they are engaged in a constant process of observation and adaptation—each modifying their own play accordingly. We are always observing, adapting, and making our work feel like play.

Shannon Doronio Chavez is a graphic designer, educator, speaker, and eadvocate. She is currently the Department Chair of the Graphic & Multimedia Design program at the College of the Canyons in Valencia, California.
